TO:	All Arts Organizations based in Alameda

FROM:	Jeff Cambra

RE:	Arts Coalition

Good Afternoon:

Over the past month, I have spoken to most of you regarding the
formation of an arts coalition consisting of one or two
representatives from each of the visual, performing, spoken word, etc.
arts groups based in Alameda. The purpose of forming this coalition is
to provide a forum where the groups could discuss issues effecting
them individually, and more important, to develop and implement
programs that would help all the arts in the City.

While I have no agenda for what topics this group would consider, one
of the common concerns that every organization identified as a problem
was awareness of their organization, the art, and how to increase
awareness, both locally and regionally. Additionally, I have created a
public access segment called Arts & Eats which is part of the program
Alameda Currents airing every Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. on Channel 31. I
would like to have this group act as one source of ideas for subjects
covered in the segment on the arts.

We will be getting together for introductions, provide feedback on the
coalition idea, and discuss how we might move forward tomorrow,
Thursday, February 22, 2007 at 7:00 p.m. on the mezzanine of C’ere Una
Volta Restaurant, 1332 Park Street in Redwood Square next to the Post
Office. I will be providing appetizers and the first bottle of wine.
Please contact me with the names of up to two representatives that
will be able to speak on behalf of your organization.

In addition to the Arts & Eats segment, a topic that has come up in
recent weeks is the use of the Carnegie Building as a One Stop Permit
Center. The Alameda Journal has conducted an informal survey and
published numerous Letters to the Editor supporting the use of the
building as an arts/ cultural center. A number of you have expressed
the desire to advocate for an arts/cultural use of the building. As
you might expect, the issue of using the building as an arts/cultural
center is more complicated than one would think.

I have contacted Debra Kurita, City Manager in order to set up a
meeting with the arts stakeholders to discuss the use of the building.
This meeting is not part of the public meeting process that will be
scheduled in the near future regarding the use of the building. It is
a meeting designed to create a dialogue with City staff to better
understand the perceived advantages and obstacles to the use of the
building as an arts/cultural center. This is not an attempt to avoid
the public forum process, but rather an opportunity to understand the
City’s approach to problems created by using the building as an
arts/cultural center.

I would like to be very clear that I am not suggesting this coalition
take on the arts/cultural center issue. However, if the group decides
to become involved, this would be the time to have the collective arts
community of Alameda participate in the process and hopefully, speak
with one voice. If your group is interested in selecting and sending a
representative, the meeting will be at 4:00 p.m. at City Hall, Room
320.

I am looking forward to meeting each of you in person and working with
you to collectively promote the arts in Alameda.

Sincerely,

Jeff Cambra
